MODERNIZATION OF THE LONG-LENGTH WASTE CUTTING FACILITY AT CHERNOBYL NPP (Long-length waste cutting facility, LLWCF)
Project: TACIS U4.01/06W: Modernization of the long-length waste cutting facility at Chernobyl NPP, Ukraine. Contractor: Company AMEC Nuclear International Ltd (United Kingdom).
Funding of works is implemented for the costs of European Union in the frameworks of TACIS nuclear safety program (European Commission technical assistance)
During Chernobyl NPP units operation a great deal of the long-length items (special items and elements of reactor core) have generated and their life time ended. These items were removed from reactors and placed for the storage into the cooling ponds and technological shafts in the central halls of ChNPP. As to the design all special items have the sizes, which require special equipment and development of technological processes for management. Besides, special items and their parts, which were in operating reactors, depending on their position relatively to the centre of active core, have different level of activity on length. For cutting items, collection of waste and generating waste disposal at ChNPP Units 1, 2, 3 the long-length waste cutting facilities were designed and commissioned and they consist of: areas of the long-length items cutting and areas of containers load. The existing long-length waste cutting facilities at ChNPP dont meet the safety requirements and dont ensure the performance of all tasks concerned with release of special items in ChNPP Units 1, 2, 3.
Implementation of the project for long-length waste cutting facility at Chernobyl NPP allow to create conditions for: 1. Safety management with RAW and special items generating during: - cutting of long-length items for fragments; - graphite disposal from reactor channels; - preliminary sorting of special items fragments on RAW categories; - conditioning of generating RAW. 2. Preventing of radioactive waste dissemination to the working compartments and environment in the quantities of exceeding fixed limits. 3. Mitigation of radioactive impact on personnel. 4. Safety release of ChNPP Units from a great deal of special items including their high active fragments.
Work progress: According to calendar schedule, the Contractor performed jobs on gathering initial data for project development, as well as works on preparation to conduct inspection of building structures of technological shafts, utility networks and infrastructure of the central halls of Chernobyl NPP Units 1, 2 and 3. AMEC Nuclear International Ltd Company provided the following deliverables: Quality Assurance Program; Preliminary Report; Report on Performed Works for September 2009; Program of Inspecting Building Structures of Technological Shafts, Utility Networks and Infrastructure of the Central Halls of Chernobyl NPP Units 1, 2 and 3; Work Performance Schedule.
All documentation received from the Contractor had been reviewed by ChNPP specialists within terms prescribed by the contract. Remarks are arranged by due form and submitted to the Contractor. These documents are under agreement.
